How to check sold items on eBay
Active listings tell you what sellers hope for. Sold listings tell you what someone paid, which is the only number worth pricing against, and eBay gives them away free behind a filter most people never find. Two catches, and both were measured on a real search rather than assumed. A sold search on eBay reaches back about 90 days and no further. And a large share of sold clothing results are marked Best offer accepted, which means the price shown is what the seller was asking, not what the buyer paid, so the true median sits somewhere below what you are reading.
Build the searches
One search is not a comp set. These are the three worth opening for any garment, narrowest first, and they open on eBay in a new tab.

Doing it by hand
The builder is a shortcut. The filter it is pressing for you is worth knowing, because it is the same three steps on every item.
1. Search the item on eBay
Brand first, then what the thing is. Leave out the adjectives sellers pad titles with, because eBay matches your words against theirs and every extra word narrows the set.
2. Tick Sold items
On desktop it is in the left-hand filter column under Show only. In the phone app it is behind Filter. Sold results arrive already sorted by Ended Recently, so you do not need to change the sort.
3. Read the median, not the top price
The highest sold price on the page is the one everyone quotes and the one nobody repeats. Take the middle of the results that genuinely match your garment and price to that.
What a sold price does not tell you
Four things, all of them visible on any sold search once you know to look. Each was checked against a live search of sold Patagonia fleeces on 28 August 2026 rather than taken on trust.
- Best offer accepted hides the real price
- Most of the sold clothing results on that search carried the label. The price shown is what the seller was asking; what the buyer paid is private. Your true median sits below what you are reading.
- Auctions and Buy It Now are different questions
- The same fleece closed at $29 on five bids and at $65 on Buy It Now. Both are real sales. Averaging them describes neither, so decide which way you are selling before you pick a comp.
- The words matched, the garment may not have
- A North Face fleece turned up in the Patagonia results, because the listing contained the words. This is why the brand-only search exists: when its median sits far from your narrow search, one of them caught the wrong item.
- Condition is invisible
- A sold search cannot tell you whether the one that made $65 was mint or pilled at the cuffs, and condition is the largest single lever on resale price. eBay's condition filter is the seller's own label, not an assessment. It is a starting point, not a grade. How condition grading works.
Common questions
- How do I check sold items on eBay?
- Search for the item, then scroll the left-hand filter column to Show only and tick Sold items. On the phone app it is under Filter, then Sold items. The faster route is the URL: adding LH_Sold=1&LH_Complete=1 to any eBay search does the same thing in one step, which is what the search builder above does for you. Sold results already arrive sorted by Ended Recently, so the top of the list is the most current.
- How far back do eBay sold listings go?
- About 90 days. Past that the listings drop off the search entirely, which is why a comp set for a seasonal item taken in August is not the same comp set you would have taken in February. If an item barely sells, three months may return too few results to price from, and the honest response is to widen the search rather than price off two data points.
- Why does eBay show Best offer accepted instead of a price?
- Because the buyer and seller agreed a price privately and eBay does not publish it. The number displayed is the asking price the listing carried, so the real sale was somewhere below it. On a live search of sold Patagonia fleeces on 2026-08-28, most of the results carried that label. Treat those as a ceiling, not a sale, and lean on the Buy It Now and auction results for your median.
- Are sold listings the same as what an item is worth?
- No, and the gap catches sellers out twice. An auction that closed at $29 with five bids and a Buy It Now that closed at $65 are both real sales of the same garment in different sale formats, and averaging them describes neither. Condition is the other half: a sold search cannot see whether the item that made $65 was mint or pilled, and condition is the largest single lever on resale price.
- Why is another brand showing up in my search?
- Because eBay is matching your words, not your garment. A search for Patagonia Synchilla fleece on 2026-08-28 returned a North Face fleece among the sold results, because the listing contained the words. Adding the category filter helps, keeping the brand name first helps more, and the brand-only search in the builder above exists so you can spot when one of your narrower searches has drifted.
