Is Whatnot legit? The seller's answer
Yes. Whatnot Inc. has run its live-shopping marketplace since 2019 and raised money at a $20 billion valuation in August 2026. The seller's question is different from the buyer's: how fast payouts land, what Whatnot covers when a parcel goes missing or a buyer files a claim, and what selling there actually costs.
Fees, deadlines and payout times verified October 2026
Who runs Whatnot
Whatnot Inc., founded in 2019 and based in Marina del Rey, California. It is private and venture-funded: a $545 million round in August 2026 valued it at $20 billion. There has been no sale or change of ownership. Selling there means selling mostly on camera, in live shows, which is the thing to decide about before the fees.
When you get paid
Earnings become available once the carrier confirms delivery; in the US that is up to four hours after. If you use your own label, it is seven days after you add tracking. Sellers who meet Whatnot's rating and sales thresholds get Early Payout, which releases the money when the label is created. Payouts go to a bank account only, through Stripe, and arrive in one to two business days; PayPal is no longer offered.
What Whatnot covers for sellers
Carrier delays after you dropped the parcel off on time, packages lost, undelivered or misdelivered, and abusive or fraudulent buyers. Whatnot's help center also says it handles chargebacks and payment disputes directly, which none of Depop, Poshmark, Mercari or Vinted says about itself. The conditions are strict: ship within two business days of the sale, keep proof of shipment (the in-app scan photo counts), and answer within two business days when asked. Counterfeit or prohibited items are never covered.
How a buyer's claim runs
A buyer has 14 days from delivery or 30 from purchase, whichever comes first, and only 7 days in categories including sneakers and streetwear; most sales are otherwise final. You act first and have two business days: refund in full, refund with a return, offer a partial refund, send a replacement, deny, or ask for more information. If you do not respond, or the buyer turns down your offer, Whatnot refunds them and bills you. You can appeal once, within 14 days.
ID, tax and the scams aimed at sellers
Selling needs your legal name, a government ID checked by Stripe or Persona, and an SSN or EIN; without a valid tax ID Whatnot withholds 24% of earnings. The scams it warns sellers about are fake staff messages (real ones come only from whatnot.com), people copying a buyer's username after they leave a show, deals moved off the platform, which lose all protection, and look-alike login pages. Whatnot never asks for your password, bank details or a login code.
What it costs, and the one thing to know
Since 21 September 2026 the commission is tiered. Clothing pays the Fashion rate: 8% of the item price for sellers under $15,000 in the last 28 days, stepping down to 4.5% at volume. Payment processing of 2.9% plus $0.30 is charged on the whole order, shipping and tax included. The one thing to know before committing stock: if Whatnot permanently bans an account, the remaining balance is typically paid out 60 days later, and the Better Business Bureau rates the company F, so read the seller rules before your first show rather than after.
Where grading fits
On a live show the buyer has seconds to decide and no time to inspect, so the condition you state on camera is the condition you will be held to in a claim. Saying the 1.0–10.0 grade out loud and putting the certificate in the listing turns that into a record rather than a memory.
Frequently asked
- Is Whatnot safe for sellers?
- Safer than most on payment disputes: Whatnot's own help center says it manages chargebacks and payment disputes for sellers, and it covers lost and late parcels and fraudulent buyers. The protection depends on shipping within two business days with proof, and answering any claim within two business days.
- How long does Whatnot take to pay sellers?
- Earnings are available up to four hours after the carrier confirms delivery, or seven days after you add tracking on your own label. Eligible sellers get Early Payout when the label is created. A bank payout then takes one to two business days.
- Do you need an SSN to sell on Whatnot?
- Yes, or an EIN. Whatnot requires a US tax ID to sell, and withholds 24% of earnings as backup withholding if it does not have a valid one.
