Is Mercari legit? The seller's answer
Yes. Mercari is a Japanese company founded in 2013, and its US app has run since 2014. For a seller the answer depends on three rules: you are paid only once the buyer rates, shipping protection covers Mercari's own labels, and Mercari decides a return claim. Here is how each one works.
Fees, deadlines and payout times verified October 2026
Who runs Mercari
Mercari, Inc., based in Tokyo and founded in 2013. The US marketplace launched in September 2014. Jeff LeBeau became chief executive of the US business on 1 July 2026. It is the same company and the same app it has been for a decade; what changed recently is the fee, which went to 10% in January 2025.
When you get paid
Not until the sale completes. The buyer has three days after delivery to rate you, and if they do not, Mercari rates the sale five stars automatically and releases your money. A reported problem freezes the payment until it is resolved, and Mercari can also hold payouts while it reviews an account. Direct deposit to your bank is free and typically arrives within five business days; Instant Pay to a debit card costs $3 and needs your ID verified first.
What shipping protection covers
Every Mercari prepaid label carries shipping protection: up to $200 on standard, economy and media mail labels. It applies when the parcel was scanned by the carrier within three days of purchase, was packed properly, and the buyer has not already rated. A label you bought yourself is not covered, and neither is a prohibited or oversize item. Mercari's help center promises no protection against chargebacks, and it can limit accounts with high return or chargeback rates.
How a return claim is decided
A buyer can ask for a return within 72 hours of delivery, before rating, if the item is significantly not as described, damaged or not authentic, and has to send clear photos. Mercari decides. If it approves, it provides the return label for parcels up to 50 pounds, the buyer has 72 hours to ship it back, and the refund follows once it reaches you. A return because the buyer changed their mind is your call, not Mercari's.
Identity, tax, and the scams aimed at sellers
Mercari describes itself as a money service business and can ask for your name, address, date of birth, SSN and a government ID, closing the account if you refuse. Its 1099-K threshold follows the federal one: more than $20,000 and 200 sales in a year. Mercari never contacts you through in-app chat with links and only emails from mercari.com, so a message asking you to verify an account, or a buyer asking to pay another way, is the scam.
Where grading fits
Mercari decides a return claim on the buyer's photos against your listing. A 1.0–10.0 grade, a condition report and photos of every flaw put your side of the evidence in the listing itself, which is where Mercari looks first.
Frequently asked
- Is Mercari safe for sellers?
- For shipping, yes: Mercari's prepaid labels carry up to $200 of protection. It does not promise sellers protection against chargebacks, and it decides return claims itself, so clear photos and an honest description matter more there than on platforms where the seller gets the first say.
- Why is my Mercari money still pending?
- Mercari pays only when the sale completes, which happens when the buyer rates you or three days after delivery if they do not. A reported problem, or an account review, holds the money until it is resolved.
- How much does Mercari take from a sale?
- 10% of the item price plus any shipping the buyer paid, with no separate processing fee, since January 2025. The buyer also pays a 3.6% Buyer Protection fee at checkout.
