How to Grade Faded Spandex Blend Clothing Condition: The Two Failure Modes
Spandex (Lycra is DuPont's branded version) is never the whole fabric — it's blended at 2% to 20% with cotton, nylon, or polyester to create stretch and recovery. When a stretch garment looks "tired," one of two things is happening, and sometimes both:
- Color loss — the dye has faded or shifted from UV exposure, chlorine, detergent stripping, or repeated washing. The fabric still stretches and snaps back the way it did new. This is purely cosmetic.
- Elastic fiber degradation — the spandex filaments themselves have broken down from heat (dryers), chlorine, body oils, or age. The fabric loses recovery: it stretches out and stays stretched, goes baggy at stress points, or develops a permanently slack waistband. This is structural, and it changes wearability.

Not all stretch fabrics degrade at the same rate, and the percentage of spandex in the blend tells you how much margin you're working with. - Release and let it rest, unstretched, for 30 seconds on a flat surface.
- Re-measure the same dimension. Full recovery means it returns within 2–3% of the original measurement.
- Repeat the stretch-and-release cycle three times in a row at the same point. Elastane that's degrading will show progressively worse recovery on each cycle — a garment with healthy spandex holds steady.
- Separately, check color under a single consistent light source (a north-facing window or a 5000K bulb) and compare the stressed area — waistband, seat — against a low-wear area like the inside hem. A visible tonal shift between the two with equal recovery on both means you're looking at pure fade, not degradation.
- Record both findings independently: recovery percentage and color delta. Grade fabric structure and cosmetic appearance as separate line items even though they came from the same test.
If recovery holds and only color has shifted, you're grading a cosmetic defect. If recovery fails and color is intact, you're grading a structural defect — and it caps the grade regardless of how the garment looks in photos.
