Vintage Wool Felting and Shrinkage: How to Grade Fulled Fiber, Armhole Pucker, and Waistband Tightness
Here's the short answer: felting itself isn't a defect — it's a fiber state. To grade a felted wool sweater for resale, you check whether the fulled fabric is still flexible and airy (Good or better) or dense, board-stiff, and losing loft (Fair to Poor), then check three shrinkage zones — body, armhole, and waistband — separately, because a garment can felt evenly but shrink unevenly, and that mismatch is what actually tanks wearability.
We've graded a lot of wool sweaters that came in tagged "slightly felted, still wearable" by the seller who listed them, and half the time that seller never tried them on. Felting changes the hand of the fabric first and the fit second. Sellers who only check the fabric miss the armhole pucker that makes the sleeve un-raisable, or the waistband that's gone from stretch-to-fit to a hard stop at the ribs. Both of those are separate calls from "is the wool felted," and both change the grade more than the felting does.
Felting vs. fulling: what's actually happening to the fiber
These two words get used interchangeably by resellers, but they describe different points on the same damage curve, and knowing which one you're looking at tells you how far the fabric has degraded.
- Fulling is the early stage — heat and agitation cause the wool scales to lock together slightly, tightening the weave or knit. The fabric gets a little denser and a little smaller, but individual stitches or weave lines are still visible under magnification. This is often intentional in boiled wool and Melton construction, so it isn't always a defect at all.
- Felting is fulling taken past the point of return. The fiber scales have interlocked so thoroughly that the knit or weave structure disappears — you can no longer trace individual stitches, the fabric behaves like a solid mat, and it has lost the elasticity that let wool knitwear stretch and recover.
The line matters for grading because fulling is often a Fabric Condition note, not a tier-capping defect, while true felting is a Fabric Condition failure that usually also drags Structural Integrity down with it, because a felted knit has lost the give it needs to move with a body.
The three-zone shrinkage check
A wool sweater doesn't shrink as one flat percentage. Wash-and-dry shrinkage concentrates wherever the fabric was under the most heat and moisture and had the least room to move — which is almost never uniform across a garment. Grade these three zones independently before you assign a tier.
1. Body and hem
This is the zone sellers check by default, and it's the easiest to spot: a sweater that used to hit mid-hip now hits above the waist, or the chest measurement is 2+ inches under the tag size. Body shrinkage is a straightforward Cosmetic Appearance and sizing disclosure issue if the fabric is still flexible — list the actual measurements, not the tag size, and grade the fabric hand separately.
2. Armhole and sleeve cap
This is the zone that gets missed. Armholes shrink disproportionately because the seam allowance there is small and the fabric is doubled at the shoulder seam, so felting pulls it tighter than the open body fabric around it. The result is a pucker or drag line radiating from the underarm even when the garment is laid flat and unstressed. Puckering here is a fit-integrity problem, not a wrinkle — it means the sleeve won't move freely at the shoulder.
3. Waistband and cuffs
Ribbed waistbands and cuffs are knit tighter than the body to begin with, so they felt and shrink first and hardest. A waistband that's gone rigid loses its job — it's supposed to stretch over the hips or ribs and recover, not sit at one fixed circumference. This is a Functional Elements call, not a cosmetic one, because a non-stretching waistband changes whether the garment can be worn at all, not just how it looks.
How to run the pinch-and-release test
This is the same physical check we use across all three zones — it takes under a minute per zone and it's the fastest way to tell fulling from true felting.
- Lay the sweater flat and locate the three zones: body/hem, both armholes, and the waistband or ribbed cuffs.
- At the body fabric, pinch a section between thumb and forefinger and gently pull it away from the surface, then release.
- Watch the recovery: if the fabric springs back to flat within a second or two, the fiber still has loft and elasticity — Fabric Condition is intact. If it stays tented, creased, or slow to settle, the fiber has fulled to the point of losing recovery.
- Repeat the pinch at the armhole seam specifically, not the open body fabric next to it — armhole fabric often behaves differently even in the same garment.
- Raise the sleeve overhead or out to the side while the sweater is on a form or on your own body. Note whether the armhole pulls, puckers, or restricts the range of motion before the shoulder seam is reached.
- Stretch the waistband ribbing by hand to roughly 1.5x its resting width and let go. Time the recovery — under 3 seconds is healthy elastic recovery, a slow crawl back or a fixed stretched-out state is degraded recovery, and zero stretch at all means the rib has felted solid.
- Cross-reference all three results against the grading table below before assigning a final tier.
Armhole puckering: structural, not cosmetic
We see this misgraded constantly: a seller notices the armhole looks a little tight, calls it a minor cosmetic note, and lists at Very Good. But armhole puckering from shrinkage is a Structural Integrity issue, because it directly limits how the garment can be worn and increases the odds of a seam blowout the first time a buyer raises their arm too fast.
The tell is directionality. A pucker from felting radiates outward from the underarm seam in a starburst pattern and doesn't relax when you tug the surrounding fabric — the fiber itself has locked shorter there. A pucker from a construction or pressing issue, by contrast, usually runs in one direction along a single seam line and will ease somewhat when you work the fabric with your fingers. If it doesn't ease and it restricts arm movement in either direction, grade it as a Structural Integrity defect and cap the tier at Good at best, Fair if the restriction is significant enough that a normal-sized wearer can't lift the arm past shoulder height without strain on the seam.
Waistband tightness: when it caps the grade
Waistband and cuff felting is a Functional Elements call because the job of a ribbed hem is elasticity, and a felted rib has stopped doing that job. Use this comparison to decide where a felted waistband lands:

The waistband and the body fabric don't always agree, and that's the point of grading them separately. A sweater with soft, flexible body fabric and a rock-hard waistband should be graded by its worst functional zone, not its average — a buyer trying to pull that sweater over their hips doesn't care how nice the shoulders feel.
Putting it together in a condition report
When you write up a felted or shrunk wool sweater, don't collapse everything into one adjective. Break it into the same zones you tested:
- Fabric Condition — describe fulling/felting stage using the pinch-and-release recovery result from the body fabric.
- Structural Integrity — flag armhole puckering and any resulting range-of-motion restriction, with a tier cap if the pucker doesn't ease.
- Functional Elements — report waistband and cuff stretch recovery using the table above, since these govern wearability directly.
- Cosmetic Appearance — note visible body/hem shrinkage against original tag measurements, and provide actual current measurements.
- Odor & Cleanliness — wool that's been repeatedly hot-washed to the point of felting has often also picked up mildew or storage odor along the way; check separately, since felting and odor come from different causes and don't imply each other.
A sweater that fulled slightly in the body, has clean flexible armholes, and a waistband with full recovery can still grade Very Good or even Excellent — fulling alone isn't a killer. A sweater with minimal body shrinkage but a felted, non-stretching waistband should grade no higher than Fair, because the functional failure outweighs the cosmetic win. Grade the worst zone, not the average impression.
