To grade vintage polyester blend clothing correctly, separate three distinct issues that get lumped together as "it's just old poly": sheen loss (cosmetic, rarely caps the grade below Very Good), brittleness (structural, caps at Fair or Poor depending on severity), and weave breakdown (structural, often the real reason a garment fails in a buyer's hands). Why polyester ages differently than natural fibers
Polyester doesn't rot, felt, or moth-damage the way wool or cotton does. It degrades through a different mechanism: UV exposure and heat break down the polymer chains over decades, which shows up as three separate, testable symptoms rather than one linear decline. That's the core problem with grading vintage poly by eye — a garment can look shiny and fine while the fiber underneath is already compromised, or look dull and tired while the weave is still completely sound. You have to run the tests, not just the visual scan.
Test 1: Sheen loss — almost always cosmetic
Original polyester, especially double-knit and satin-finish poly from the 1960s–80s, has a distinct light-reflective quality. Over decades, repeated washing and UV exposure dulls that finish. This is the most common vintage-poly condition note, and on its own it's a Cosmetic Appearance issue, not a fabric integrity one.
- Even, overall dulling — sheen is reduced uniformly across the garment, front and back match. This is expected aging. Note it as cosmetic; it doesn't drop the grade below Very Good by itself.

Test 2: The flex-and-fold brittleness test
Brittleness is where vintage poly actually fails buyers, and it's a Structural Integrity call, not cosmetic. Degraded polyester fiber loses elasticity and can crack or snap at stress points — collars, cuffs, fold lines, seam allowances — well before it looks visibly damaged.
- Choose a low-visibility section of fabric — an inside hem or seam allowance — away from any existing damage.
- Fold the fabric sharply between your thumb and forefinger and hold the crease for three seconds.
- Release and observe: if the fabric springs back smoothly with no white crease line or fiber texture change, the fiber is still sound.
- If a whitish crease line appears and doesn't relax within a minute, or you feel or hear fine cracking, the fiber has lost elasticity.
- Repeat at two or three separate points on the garment — collar point, cuff, and a main body panel — since degradation is often uneven and heat/light-exposed areas (collars, shoulder seams) fail first.
- If any of the three points fails, treat the whole garment as brittleness-affected for grading purposes, even if other panels test fine.
A garment that fails this test at even one stress point should not be graded above Good, since brittle fiber is prone to sudden failure under normal wear stress a buyer will apply — sitting, reaching, fastening buttons. A garment that fails at multiple points, or shows visible cracking without needing the fold test, belongs in Fair or Poor depending on how much of the garment is affected.
Test 3: Weave integrity — the light test
Weave breakdown is distinct from brittleness. A garment can have flexible, unbroken fiber but a weave that has thinned or separated from decades of tension and washing — most common at underarms, inner elbows, and inner thighs on poly double-knits and jerseys.
- Hold the suspect area up to a strong light source, ideally daylight or a bright lamp behind the fabric.
- Look for a visible lightening or thinning where the weave has stretched or the yarns have separated slightly — you'll see more light coming through than in an adjacent, unstressed panel.
- Gently stretch the fabric on the bias at that spot. If you see individual yarns shifting or small gaps opening between them, the weave has structurally loosened.
- Check for actual holes or run-starts at the same high-stress zones — these are further along the same failure mode, not a separate defect.
