Seam slippage on vintage silk charmeuse and habotai is when the fabric shifts and gaps along the stitch line without the thread breaking or the fabric tearing — and it's graded as a Structural Integrity defect, capping the garment at Good or lower depending on the length and location of the slip. It's easy to miss because nothing looks broken. The stitches are intact. There's no hole. But the weave has pulled away from the seam, and that's a structural weakness, not a cosmetic one.

We've seen this call missed more than almost any other on silk. A seller photographs a charmeuse slip dress, the side seam looks fine in a flat lay, and it lists as Excellent. Then a buyer wears it once, the seam gaps open under the arm, and it comes back as not-as-described. The defect was there before shipping. It just wasn't obvious until the fabric was put under tension.

## What Seam Slippage Actually Is

Charmeuse and habotai are both plain- or satin-weave silks with a low thread count relative to their weight — charmeuse runs a satin weave with a lustrous face and matte back, habotai is a plain weave, lighter and often used for linings. Both share the same vulnerability: the yarns are smooth, low-friction, and spaced widely enough that repeated stress at a seam can cause the fabric to migrate away from the stitching without the stitching itself failing.

This is different from a torn seam, a popped seam, or thread failure. In those cases, either the thread breaks or the fabric rips. In seam slippage, the thread is still doing its job — it's just that the fabric on either side of it has shifted, leaving a visible gap, sometimes with frayed yarn ends poking through, sometimes just an open channel you can see light through.

## The Fabric-Spread Test

You don't need lab equipment to catch this. You need tension and a light source. Here's the inspection procedure we use before grading any silk garment with load-bearing seams — side seams, underarm seams, waistband attachments, sleeve caps.

1. Hold the garment up to a window or lightbox and locate every seam that bears weight when worn: side seams, underarm/armscye, waistband, sleeve caps, and any bias-cut seams.
2. Gently pull the fabric perpendicular to the seam line on both sides, applying the kind of tension normal wear would create — not a hard yank, just body-movement-level stress.
3. Watch the stitch line while you pull. If the fabric puckers slightly and returns, that's normal give. If you see the weave separate and daylight appear between the yarns and the thread, that's slippage.
4. Measure the length of any visible gap. Under a quarter inch and it's a cosmetic note. A half inch or more, especially at a stress point like underarm or waistband, is a Structural Integrity issue.
5. Check whether the gap closes when tension releases. Slippage that stays open even at rest means the yarns have already migrated permanently — this grades lower than slippage that closes when you let go.
6. Repeat at every load-bearing seam, not just the one you noticed first. Slippage tends to cluster wherever the garment was worn tightest, so if you find it at one underarm, check the other.

## Slippage vs. Other Seam Defects

Resellers often lump every seam issue into one bucket. On delicate silk, they grade differently, and the language matters for disclosure.

## Where Slippage Shows Up First

- **Sleeve cap seams on blouses with set-in sleeves** — arm movement creates repeated pull exactly where the seam is narrowest.
- **Habotai lining seams inside jackets and coats** — often overlooked because they're hidden, but they take abrasion from the wearer's body and the outer shell both.

## How Slippage Affects the Grade

Because seam slippage lives under Structural Integrity, it interacts with the other four factors but doesn't get averaged away by a pristine Fabric Condition or Cosmetic Appearance score. A charmeuse blouse with flawless color, no stains, and a perfect drape can still land at Good or Fair if the underarm seams are visibly slipping.

- **Excellent or Very Good:** No visible slippage under the fabric-spread test at any load-bearing seam. Minor pucker allowed if it's a construction artifact, not active separation.
- **Good:** Slight slippage at one seam location, under a quarter inch, that closes fully when tension releases. Disclose the location.
- **Fair:** Visible slippage at one or more seams, gaps that don't fully close, or slippage longer than a half inch at a stress point. The garment is wearable but the defect is progressing.
- **Poor:** Slippage has advanced to visible holes, multiple seam locations affected, or the fabric has begun fraying loose at the gap. Functional wear is compromised.
