A wool coat with scattered pilling under the arms and at the cuffs still grades Good. The same coat with dense bobbling across the chest, back, and collar — the surfaces buyers actually see — drops to Fair. The line isn't pill count, it's where the pills are and how deep the fiber disruption runs.

We've graded hundreds of vintage wool coats and blazers, and pilling is the single most argued-about defect in the category. Sellers see fuzz and panic into a Fair grade. Buyers see a listing photo of a coat with a shine-free surface and assume Excellent. Both are usually wrong, because pilling grading isn't about presence or absence — it's about zone, density, and whether the fiber is bobbling (raised, still attached) or matting (compressed, fiber breakdown). We covered that distinction in depth for knits. Coating fabric behaves differently because it's woven, not knit, and structured outerwear has friction zones that plain sweaters don't.

## How to Grade Pilling on Vintage Wool Coats and Jackets

Coating fabric pills less readily than knitwear because the weave is tighter and the fibers are shorter and more tightly twisted in most wool coatings (melton, boucle, and herringbone all behave differently, but the mechanism is the same: friction lifts fiber ends, they tangle into balls, and they either shed or mat). On a structured coat, pilling shows up first at contact points — underarms, inside elbows, where a bag strap rubes the shoulder, and where a scarf or collar rubs the neckline. High-density body wool (melton) resists it longest. Loosely spun boucle and bouclé-adjacent tweeds pill fastest because the loop yarns catch on everything.

1. Lay the coat flat under raking light (a lamp held at a low angle across the surface) to reveal texture that overhead light hides.
2. Divide the garment mentally into zones: collar and lapel, chest and back panels, sleeves, underarms, cuffs, and pocket edges.
3. Run your palm flat across each zone and note where you feel raised fiber balls versus where the surface stays smooth.
4. For any pilled zone, pinch a pill between thumb and forefinger and tug gently. If it lifts free easily, it's surface pilling. If it resists and the surrounding fabric puckers, it's bobbling that has started matting into the base cloth.
5. Count how many of the five high-visibility zones (collar, lapel, chest, back, and outer sleeve) show pilling versus how many low-visibility zones (underarm, inner cuff, pocket lining edge) show it.
6. Cross-reference density against the tier table below to assign the Cosmetic Appearance component of the grade.

## Bobbling vs Pilling vs Matting: What You're Actually Feeling

These three terms get used interchangeably by sellers and they shouldn't be. Pilling is the early stage: short fiber ends lift and begin to tangle into small balls, still loosely attached to the weave. Bobbling is pilling that has grown denser and more raised — you can see it from three feet away, not just feel it up close. Matting is the end stage on coating fabric: the pills have compressed and fused into the surface, the weave underneath has thinned or become visibly disrupted, and brushing doesn't restore the nap. Pilling and light bobbling are almost always cosmetic. Matting that has thinned the base weave crosses into Fabric Condition territory, because the fiber structure itself — not just the surface — has degraded.

The test that separates them: after you identify a pilled zone, take a fabric brush (or a dull razor edge run lightly against the grain — this is a real reseller trick, use extreme caution) and try to lift the pills. If the surface restores to a clean, even nap, you're looking at pilling or bobbling — cosmetic. If the weave stays visibly thinned or fuzzy after brushing, with a slightly worn-through look, that's matting, and it affects Fabric Condition, not just Cosmetic Appearance.

## Fair vs Good: The Zone-Density Standard

Here's where sellers most often get it wrong. A coat with pilling only in low-visibility zones (underarm, inner cuff) should not be capped below Good, even if the pilling is fairly dense there — those zones don't affect how the garment reads when worn or photographed. A coat with light-to-moderate pilling spread across high-visibility zones (chest, back, collar) is a Good at best, because a buyer will see it in the primary listing photos and on the body. A coat with dense bobbling or any matting in high-visibility zones is Fair, because no amount of accurate photography disguises it, and it will visibly affect the garment's appearance when worn.

## Why Coating Fabric Grades Differently Than Knitwear

We've written about the fiber-depth test for pilling on vintage knits, and the underlying physics is the same — but coating fabric has two things sweaters don't: structure and visibility zones defined by cut, not just wear pattern. A blazer's lapel and chest panel are permanently on display whenever the garment is worn open, the way a sweater's whole surface is. A coat's underarm is almost never visible unless the wearer raises both arms. That asymmetry is why zone matters more on structured outerwear than blanket pill density. We also weight Structural Integrity separately from Cosmetic Appearance here: if bobbling has caused the interfacing or lining underneath to pucker or separate at a seam, that's a Structural Integrity issue on top of the cosmetic one, and it stacks against the grade rather than replacing it.

## Fabric Type Changes the Threshold

Not all wool coatings pill at the same rate, and buyers implicitly know this, so grading should account for it:

- **Melton** (dense, felted wool) resists pilling heavily. Any visible pilling on melton signals real wear and should be weighted toward the stricter end of its tier.
- **Herringbone and tweed** pill moderately at friction points. Expect some pilling even on well-cared-for coats in this weight class; grade it against the zone table above rather than penalizing on sight.
- **Boucle and loop-yarn wool** pills fastest and most visibly, often within a single season of regular wear. A boucle coat with moderate pilling in high-visibility zones may still be Good if the loops themselves are intact and not pulling loose from the base weave.
- **Wool-blend coatings** (wool/nylon, wool/acrylic) often pill worse than pure wool because synthetic fibers don't shed pills the way wool does — they hold on. Weight blend coatings slightly stricter for the same visible density.
