## Two Different Defects Wearing the Same Location

Deodorant marks and sweat oxidation share real estate but not a cause, and that difference matters for grading.

**Deodorant and antiperspirant residue** is buildup — aluminum chlorohydrate and other antiperspirant compounds combine with fabric fibers over repeated wears and washes. It sits mostly on the surface and just inside the weave. Visually it reads as a whitish, grayish, or slightly waxy haze, sometimes with a stiff or crusty texture you can feel between your fingers. Because it's largely a surface deposit, it can sometimes be reduced — not always fully removed — with enzyme pre-treatment, white vinegar soaks, or a baking soda paste. **Sweat oxidation** is a different mechanism entirely. Vague language is what turns a fair grade into a dispute. Match your listing copy to what you actually found:

Vintage silk blouses and rayon shirts oxidize faster and more visibly than heavier cottons, because the fibers are thinner and the dye chemistry reacts more readily with sweat salts.
