# How to Grade Appliqué Damage on Vintage Clothing: Lifting, Thread Loss, and the Poor-Tier Line

Appliqué and embroidery damage grades on two things: whether the motif is still structurally attached, and whether the thread work has enough integrity left to survive normal handling. A lifted edge you can re-tack is a Cosmetic Appearance note. A motif with missing sections, exposed backing, or thread so brittle it snaps when flexed is a Structural Integrity failure — and that's what pushes a garment toward Fair or Poor.
